Phoneopia Privacy Policy

Phoneopia ("we", "us", "the app") is a messaging application that provides text chat, voice and video calls, voice notes, status updates, an AI assistant, and translation features. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. By using Phoneopia you agree to this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Account information: your phone number and a display name you provide during sign-up (verified by OTP).
Profile data: optional profile photo, status message, and "about" text you choose to add.
Messages & media: the text, images, files, voice notes, and call metadata you send and receive, so they can be delivered to your chats.
Contacts: phone numbers you add as contacts within the app, used only to connect you with other Phoneopia users.
Device & technical data: a push-notification token, app version, device model, and basic logs needed for delivery, security, and troubleshooting.

2. How We Use Your Information

To deliver your messages, calls, and notifications.
To verify your account and keep it secure.
To provide optional features you choose to use — AI assistant replies, voice transcription, and translation.
To improve reliability and fix problems.

3. Sharing of Information

We do not sell your personal data. We share information only:

With other users you communicate with (the content you send them).
With service providers that power core features, including Google Firebase (push notifications) and AI/transcription providers used solely to generate the assistant, transcript, or translation you requested.
Where required by law or to protect the safety of users.

4. AI Services and Third-Party AI Processing

Phoneopia offers several optional features that use artificial intelligence to process the specific content you choose to pass to them:

Voice-message transcription — the voice note you tap "Transcribe" on is converted to text.
Scam and phishing detection — the specific message you ask us to check is analysed for scam/phishing signals.
Automatic translation — the specific message or text you select is translated into the target language.
Auto-reply suggestions — your incoming message plus the training text you provided generates a suggested reply.
AI image generation — the text prompt you enter is used to generate an image.

What is sent: only the specific content you select for the feature (one voice note, one message, one prompt, etc.). We do not send your entire chat history, contact list, or any content you have not explicitly selected for AI processing.

Who processes it: the selected content is sent to Phoneopia servers and forwarded to third-party AI providers that operate under contract to Phoneopia and are only permitted to use the data to fulfil your request. Current providers include OpenAI (text and image generation), Google Cloud (speech-to-text), and comparable scam-detection APIs. We do not sell your data to these providers and they are not permitted to use it to train their own models.

Your consent: AI processing is opt-in. The first time you tap an AI feature inside the app, you are shown a dialog that explains what is sent and asks for your permission. You can withdraw consent at any time from Settings → AI Services, which disables all AI features in the app. Disabling AI never affects your ability to send regular messages or make calls.

Retention: AI requests and their outputs are retained only as long as necessary to deliver the feature (typically seconds to minutes). We do not store the raw AI output beyond the message you receive on your device.

5. Data Retention and Account Deletion

Your messages and account data are kept while your account is active. You may delete individual chats from within the app at any time.

You can permanently delete your Phoneopia account and all associated personal data directly from the app at Settings → Delete account. This removes your profile, phone number, contacts, media, group memberships, and other personally-identifiable data from our servers. Messages you have sent to group conversations are anonymised (shown as "Deleted User") so other participants' chat history remains readable. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

If you cannot access the in-app deletion flow, you may also request account deletion by emailing admin@rehanfoundation.com.

6. Security

We use industry-standard measures (encrypted connections, token-based authentication) to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to safeguard your information.

7. Children

Phoneopia is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect data from children.

8. Your Choices

Edit or remove your profile photo, name, and status at any time.
Manage notification and privacy settings inside the app.
Enable or disable AI Services at any time in Settings → AI Services.
Permanently delete your account from Settings → Delete account.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
